Background

At the end of 2022, the number of residential buildings in the German federal capital amounted to around 333400. More than half of the apartments in Berlin (53.2 percent) were built between 1949 and 2010. Around a quarter date from the Wilhelminian era and were built by 1918.

The need for renovation is therefore extremely high and Picote Brush CoatingTM is a cost-effective and quick solution to extend the life of aged pipes in buildings by a further 30 - 50 years.

The advantages of trenchless methods, especially in residential buildings in urban areas, are obvious. The construction work is completed in a very short time, the building remains usable, and the environmental impact caused by dirt or traffic restrictions is negligible.

The Picote Solution

The goal was to renovate a vertical rainwater stack pipe with a length of 15.3m in a residential building with 5 floors. The access was on the flat roof (balcony).

The Preparation

First and crucial step like in any rehabilitation work was a thorough camera-monitored host-pipe cleaning executed by the contractor aqendo Berlin.

Using Picote Cleaning Equipment including Picote Smart Cutter™️, 20x40, ensured that all deposits, incrustations, and other adhesions could be thoroughly removed.

The Picote Smart Cutter™️ is a highly versatile tool which not only ensures thorough cleaning, but also slightly roughens the inner pipe surface to allow for the resin to have the best possible bond to the pipe wall.

The Challenges

The challenges in this project were the small diameter of the pipe, only DN50, with several 90° bends and a length of 15m which demanded maximum flexibility from the equipment.

The Picote Xpress Pump system has been chosen by aqendo due to its faster curing times, no resin waste, less mess, and minimal setup time.

Its dual hydraulic resin cylinders containing the new 1:1 epoxy features an increased thickness per layer and as little as 1 hour curing time between coats at 25°C.

The motorized Delivery Hose Reel that stores 40m of delivery hose on board, allowed for easy setup and movement to the work site.

The Equipment

Equipped with special hoses for small diameters from DN50 (Small Diameter Hose Kit suitable for pipes from DN32) the Xpress System handled several 90° bends despite the pipe’s reduced diameter.

The Picote Battery Super Mini Miller with its low weight and handy dimensions, was the ideal combination partner for comfortable work without a power connection for both the cleaning work and the coating.

Timo Jensen, Managing Director of aqendo Berlin sums it up succinctly:

“It simply works.”

The results of the first resin layer applied were so satisfactory that the team decided to apply only one more layer. The ambient temperature of 24°C made the use of the Picote Heater unnecessary which is used to accelerate the curing process at low outside temperatures.

The Result

The project was accepted after less than 8 hours to the complete satisfaction of the customer.
